The World Wide Web was based on a protocol developed by Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist. He invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Berners-Lee developed the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), which allowed for the creation of websites and linking of documents on the internet.
